sult being that whilst a letter can be transmitted from

London to Chefoc for one penny, the forwarding of samé from

Chefoo to Tientsin (a distance of only a few miles) costs

two penee half penny.

The recent momentous events in the Far East have

rendered it desirable that Great Britain should be in all

respect as well equipped commercially with essential facili-

ties as other Turopean nations, and for these reasons the

Council of this Chamber venture to urge that it is most

desirable that a British Post Office be established at

Tientsin.

The growth of that town, both in population, and

as a commercial and trading sentre has been rapid during

the last decade and the contemplated construction of a rail

way from Kalgan to Tientsin which will bring Mongolia into

improved communication with it, is an additional reason

the above mentioned suggestion should be acceded to.

I am to express the hope of the Council that you

will give favourable consideration to the views set forth

in this communication, and have the honour to remain, My

Lord, Your, &c.,

Referring to your letter of the 10th. instant,:

which you draw attention to the fact that no British Post

Office is maintained at Tientsin, although Post Offices kæ have been established in that city by the Governments of certain foreign countries, I am directed by the Postmaster General to acquaint you, for the information of the London

Chamber
